Facebook Promoted Anti-Muslim Propaganda in India


The former Facebook employee cited internal documents referring to ‘fear-mongering content’ promoted by RSS-linked pages.

Facebook was well aware of incendiary anti-Muslim narratives being promoted on the platform in India, whistleblower and former Facebook employee Frances Haugen told United States authorities, The Wire reported.

Members of Congress are investigating the firm’s role in the Jan. 6 violence at the United States Capitol, and the company is responding to document requests.

According to whistleblower and former Facebook employee Frances Haugen, Facebook was always aware of all the incendiary anti-Muslim propaganda posted on its platforms in India by members of right-wing Hindu nationalists, but chose to ignore it.

A leaked internal FB document, “Adversarial Harmful Networks – India Case Study”, is cited in one of the SEC complaints uploaded on CBS News’ website.


Last year, The Wall Street Journal had quoted unnamed current and former Facebook staff who had claimed that the platform allowed posts by BJP legislators that incited violence, on the advice of Ankhi Das, its then public policy director for South and Central Asia, who was linked to the RSS.
